What are the different types of commercial doors?

Here at Modulo, we understand the importance of choosing the right and best commercial door, as each development you work on will have different needs. Choosing the right commercial door is important for several reasons, as they play a key role in functionality, safety and the appearance of your building.

Another key role is to make sure they are compliant with safety regulations and stay up to date with the changing national standards. In this blog we will cover the different types of commercial doors you can choose from for your next building project.

Commercial Aluminium Doors

Aluminium doors are an excellent option for suited commercial buildings, they come with great benefits such as being easily customisable and offering excellent levels of durability.

Aluminium doors are also super lightweight so they won’t require more manpower compared to other doors. Commercial aluminium doors are known for their modern aesthetic, a highly popular theme for offices and retails spaces.Aluminium is a 100% recyclable material and can be re-used many times without losing any of its quality, helping to greatly reduce your company’s carbon footprint.

Commercial Fire Doors

Every building will have standard safety regulations that the developers need to follow to ensure the building remains compliant and there is no risk of fire or damage. The main role of a commercial fire door is to contain fire and smoke in a set area,  making sure it doesn’t spread leading to more damage and more lives at risk.

To get a commercial fire door, the door will have to pass a test for either BS476-22 or EN13501-2 for its performance against the resistance of fire. You can read more about the difference between BS476-22 and EN13501-2 and the upcoming changes, here. Once passed, the door will have a field of application report to declare how the door can be installed and how long the commercial door can resist the passage of fire. The commercial fire door can then go on site to be installed but if you make any changes to the material or ironmongery after it was tested, this will now mean the fire door is no longer safe or compliant.

In the next 5 years we will see the removal of all national standards being removed from building regulations, meaning all of the parts of BS476 for both reaction and resistance to fire have been removed. It is crucial to keep up to date with these changes as it will determine whether your doors are compliant or not.  Commercial fire doors are usually found in schools, offices and hospitals due to these areas being highly populated.

Glass Commercial Doors

You will find that glass commercial doors are often more popular for storefronts and offices, due to their ability to allow natural daylight into a room, making it feel more spacious and brighter, improving the aesthetic feel of the inside.

All glass commercial doors will have reinforced glass for a number of benefits including high strength and surface hardness which will ensure it offers strong durability. It is also sound insulated, fire resistance and weather-proof which is every developer’s dream. They will feature a smart lock integration which means you can electronically lock and unlock doors remotely, allowing enhanced convenience and security.

Steel Commercial Doors

Steel Commercial Doors are all about strength, durability and security which is why they are commonly used in warehouses, industrial settings and high-security buildings.

The construction uses advanced manufacturing techniques that use robust materials and ensure they can withstand constant use without wearing down quickly, providing excellent value over time. From the doors being highly durable this leads them to have increased security features. As they have been designed with solid construction and materials, this makes them highly resistant to forced entry or any attempts to damage the doors.

Wooden Commercial Doors

Modulo doorsets are known for wooden commercial doors. We have a range of wooden doors, fire rated or non-fire rated in a range of colours and a choice of ironmongery. Wooden commercial doors will give off a classic and premium aesthetic to an interior, this of course will depend on the design, hardware and colour you choose for your project. The common places you will find wooden doors are in hotels, law firms and executive offices, more higher-end buildings as they are seen as a premium.  Maintaining these doors by regularly cleaning and removing any dirt, checking for moisture or humidity can keep them fully functional for a long time. Automatic & Revolving Doors

Automatic & Revolving are highly convenient for high traffic buildings such as shopping centres and airports. This is because they ensure a smooth and continuous flow of people so areas don’t become blocked or overcrowded. They will enhance efficiency as it will save time and energy by opening only when needed. One of the main reasons developers will choose automatic and revolving door is due to the ease of themas they will just open when needed. This is a big advantage in terms of both convenience and cleanliness.

Secure Commercial Doors

Doors rated to PAS24 are often used in commercial spaces to provide additional security, for instances such as front doors, entrance doors or where additional security is needed. PAS24 is a publicly available specification published by BSI that provides a method for testing the security of a door against break ins or burglary. PAS24 can give developers confidence in the security of a door by providing certification for a measure of performance.

Choosing the Right Commercial Door

Choosing the right door can be complicated, but the first thing to do is work out what industry you will be installing it for, if there are any security requirements and finally what budget you have to work with. For example, if you are looking to install doors into a shop and you need a professional finish, you would most likely choose the glass commercial doors.
